The green band is the even-money range and the one to plan on: half of outcomes land inside it. The pale band behind it bounds eight in ten ($261,565 to $407,997). The path is this model's own: it starts along the momentum of its recorded history and bends toward its projected median as the horizon lengthens, so no two cars share a future curve.

The verdict

Strong within its price band. Scores 73/100, ranking 5 of 104 in the over $100k band. Scarcity is the strongest input, liquidity the weakest.
Running it costs about $13,550 a year (5.1% of value), which is what the economics score measures. All in, including the projected value change, it is $7,275 a year.
The model's five year median is $316,477, a +19.4% move, with the tenth percentile at $261,565.

6 completed Australian sales of 13 rows. Rows marked asking, no sale, or context are shown for honesty but do not count toward the evidence grade: an ask is not a transaction, a pass-in is a refusal, and a provenance or overseas result does not price the ordinary local car. The badge on every row is computed by the same rule as the grade, so the two cannot drift apart.

No forecast is used to compute the hurdle. It is the purchase, the duty, any premium and 5 years of running cost, grossed up for the cost of selling and spread back over the hold. The projection it is measured against is the weakest number in this product and is drawn that way in the chart above. Transport, finance and any restoration spend sit outside it.

The case for and against

The case for

The homologation special that won Bathurst, with 405 built and only 100 hatchbacks. 327 verified sales across the LH/LX range give genuine price discovery, which almost no Australian model has.

The case against

The $595,000 top of the range is a hatchback or an exceptional car, not the norm. Tributes and look-alikes are openly traded, so verification is everything, and values are well down from the 2021 peak. The auction record also sets a ceiling the library previously sat above: four cars sold between $196,000 and $290,000, while three more passed in at $240,000, $360,000 and $390,000 reserves, one of them in the same month a car sold at $290,000.

327 verified LH/LX SL/R 5000, L32, L34, A9X and SS sales range $33,000-$595,000 (australianmusclecarsales.com.au, since 2003). The upper end of that range is A9X territory. 405 A9Xs built: 305 sedans and 100 hatchbacks.

Australian auction record

Four A9Xs sold at Shannons between 2018 and 2022 at $275,000, $196,000, $290,000 and $230,500, while three more passed in at estimates of $240,000-$270,000, $360,000-$400,000 and $390,000-$420,000. The pattern is consistent: cars offered under about $300,000 cleared, cars asking above it did not, and in November 2021 one sold at $290,000 in the same month another failed at a $390,000 reserve. The ex-Bob Morris car at $705,000 in 2017 is provenance rather than market.

Australian clearance

Four of the seven A9X lots recorded here sold and three passed in - 4 of 7, or 57 per cent. That is computed from the lots recorded in this entry rather than from every lot ever offered in Australia, so read it as the clearance of this sample rather than of the model. It is included because a failure to sell is evidence about where the market is not, and those lots would otherwise sit in the record doing nothing.

June 2026, and why it sits low

A 1977 A9X sedan sold at Seven82Motors on 14 June 2026 for $205,000 at no reserve, hammer before premium. That is the fifth recorded sale and the cheapest since 2020, and it should not be read as a new level. The car is unrestored on old paint, and an old front-end repair replaced the inner tray that carried the factory chassis stamping, so the shell is ICAARS-verified as genuine but cannot evidence itself. Read the figure as what an authenticity gap costs on a car whose whole value is authenticity. The sub-$300,000 clearance pattern above is unchanged by it.

The Ryde lot is now named, and it breaks the distance penalty this record was carrying

The February 2023 result is confirmed at $235,500 on 1 February 2023 at Ryde in New South Wales, build number 218 of 405, one of the 305 cars built as four-doors - which also confirms the 100-hatchback figure this record prices as an option. It showed 196,581 kilometres.

That is the problem

This record assumed 90,000 kilometres and a 6.0 per cent penalty per 10,000 above it, which would value the Ryde car at about $95,000. It made $235,500, eleven per cent under the standard-car figure this record publishes while carrying more than twice the assumed distance. A 6.0 per cent slope is a modern performance-car number and it has no business on a 1977 homologation special, where originality, documentation and the chassis stamping set the price and the odometer is close to irrelevant.

The penalty moves to 1.0 per cent and the expected distance to 120,000

At those settings the model puts the Ryde car at $244,700 against an actual $235,500 - a four per cent miss on a car it was previously wrong about by a factor of two and a half.

This is the third record in this library whose distance term was a modern slope applied to a Classic,

After the Escort RS2000 and the AE86, and the correction always runs the same way: for cars old enough that every survivor has been apart, distance stops carrying information and condition carries all of it.
