Condition, history, originality, ownership, delivery and modification multipliers apply to every car in the library. They are applied automatically when an advertisement is analysed, and the schedule is set out once, on the analyser page.

The case for and against
Widely regarded as the last analogue, naturally aspirated M3 before turbocharging arrived, and values have more than doubled since 2016. Manuals in Laguna Seca Blue with the Competition Package command a genuine premium in a strong collector market.
The S54 engine has well documented rod bearing and VANOS failure points that make service history essential. Proper maintenance is expensive, and unverified examples carry real mechanical risk regardless of cosmetic condition. The three counted auction-house sales alone span $35,000 to $77,000, so condition and specification move this car more than the market does, and the aggregator figure previously carried here averaged across body styles that trade at very different levels.
Known faults and risks
Similar cars, and what they cost to run
The gearbox fits were run on twenty-five, before the Shannons lot whose price was never published came out of the count: fourteen manuals fit at minus 0.322 with a 3.0 per cent distance penalty; eleven automatics and SMGs fit at minus 0.759 with 4.8 per cent. At 165,000 kilometres the manual returns $43,553 and the auto $37,507 - a manual premium of about 16 per cent. On the Honda NSX in this library the same exercise returns 52 per cent at 100,000 kilometres.

The NSX manual is a collector item and the E46 manual is a preference.
And is now 3.5, blended across both gearboxes.
This record describes the Competition, and all of these results are generic E46 M3s that blend to about $40,900 at this distance. The one Competition-adjacent result in the set is a CS at $76,500 with 67,034km in May 2023. $52,000 sits between a standard car and the halo variant, which is where a Competition belongs, so the generic results frame this record rather than set it.
$67,000 at 57,018km in August 2026, $69,500 at 161,250km and $53,750 at 155,770km, all well above the stock curve. SOURCING: aggregator-surfaced results, unconfirmed against the auction house, the weakest evidence grade here.
Four results, three at Shannons and one at Mossgreen. A 2003 coupe made $44,650 in April 2017, a 2005 Competition Package car made $77,000 in March 2018, a 2002 coupe made $35,000 in November 2020 and a 2003 coupe sold within a $70,000-$80,000 estimate in August 2022 - that last figure was never published, so the midpoint is recorded and the row is not counted. The Competition Package result is the closest match to this entry and is the second-highest of the four.
156 lots, the second-deepest record in this library. Clearance is 80 per cent once repeat offerings are collapsed, easing to 73 per cent since 2024. No direction is claimed. At 1.95 times upper quartile to lower the spread sits just under the threshold where a series stops being comparable, and the reason is body style: convertibles trade far below coupes and have been set aside from the price series entirely. So have four cars that came in far above their contemporaries - EUR132,250, GBP90,850, GBP68,640 and US$106,400 - which are CSL or otherwise special cars catalogued under the plain M3 name, and a CSL GTR race car. One event distorts the record: five E46 M3s came from a single American collection sale on 4 June 2022, the same dispersal that supplied thirteen Supras.
The report prices the car in the advertisement.
